Artist's Statement -

In third grade, in Sonoma, we studied California history, and I felt like I was part of that history.  We climbed trees and waded in the slough and casually studied plants and insects, guided by Disney’s nature shows and, even though I lived most of my life in southern California, Northern California always felt like home.  The land here is magical; I love the trees and hills, the perfume of the earth that changes with the weather and seasons, the colors and shapes of the environment, and I hope to share that magic in my paintings.

Lynn Williams - Biography

I’ve lived in California most of my life, mostly in San Diego and Los Angeles. I worked for the University of California and retired from UC San Diego. I loved the beach lifestyle and climate of southern California, but the wine country called to me.

Art was always my favorite subject, and in high school I was invited to attend Saturday painting classes at San Diego State University, and to do portraits at the La Jolla Art Festival.  I didn't pursue an art career, and didn’t devote much time to art, until 2000, when I enrolled in watercolor classes with Cal Fortbrook at Mesa Jr. College, using vacation time to attend twice a week. I joined the San Diego Watercolor Society, and served as Board Secretary in 2004-2005.  When Cal retired I took classes with Elaine Harvey and Annette Paquette in San Diego, and Miriam Lansdon and Gary Griswold in Port Townsend and Port Ludlow, Washington.

Since moving to Ukiah in 2012 I’ve begun painting with acrylics, taking classes at Mendocino College, and am enjoying this new medium.  Painting the Ukiah Valley and surrounding environs has been a focus of my painting.

I was raised in a small town in Northern Ontario, Canada.

My mother was an artist and encouraged my interest in art and my early fascination with drawing.

The Canadian artists Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven painted in the area near my home and later became a source of inspiration for my work.

Now, years later and living in California, I have the chance to realize my dream of expressing my childhood memories of the north country through my paintings.

My paintings are based on my photographs in the Canadian wilderness at the family lodge next to a lake.

The subjects of my work are based on scenes emphasizing lakes, trees, skies and hills. My style is tonal with use of shapes. I paint in acrylics using mediums and glazes. My current painting is evolving into the use of subjective colors and simplified forms.
