Featured Artists for November

Sisters Come Out of the Studio

If you’re sick and tired of the same view from your windows as you shelter from

COVID 19, let your mind go somewhere else at The Corner Gallery this November.

Sisters, Nan Bearden Frenkel and Susan Bearden Gates, will mount a display of

watercolors and oil pastels to uplift everyone’s spirits. Their colorful recent works

aim for visual beauty and stimulation.

Born and raised in Mendocino County, Nan and Susan absorbed the rhythms of their

natural surroundings on mushroom hikes with their Dad and were introduced to varied

creative pursuits by their Mom, Francine Bearden, a well-known local watercolorist.

They clearly remember visiting Mendocino’s leather and jewelry workshops, candle

establishments and galleries back in the day, their eyes opened to the many

possibilities in arts and crafts.  Nan went on to get a BA in Art Practice at UC Berkeley, while Susan graduated from the College of Natural resources at Cal.

Nan has been playing quietly in her studio, puzzling over compositions for years. She thinks it’s time to share what she’s been up to.

“The last four years of successful drawings were sitting in a portfolio where not even

my family could see them. Now I’ve framed at least a dozen pieces that I can display”.

Compositions range from abstract to animal portrait, from graphic to painterly. A love

of textiles and design is woven through some of her work.

Susan is known for local land and ocean scapes that are rich in color and detail.

Family and friends savor her annual pen and ink Christmas cards, with their

households of frog families preparing for the holidays or cats packing cookie tins. She

greatly enjoys sketching on backpacking trips, sometimes turning those sketches into

watercolors of Sierra streams or ancient pines. Susan has shown her work over the

years at the Mendocino County Fair in Boonville, Edgewater Gallery in Fort Bragg, and other locations including the Savings Bank in downtown Ukiah. A small selection can currently be seen at SIP in Hopland.
